Where it is
The station sits in Xaythany district, roughly 13 km northeast of the city centre — about 30 to 45 minutes by road depending on traffic. There is no walkable route from downtown and no metro. Every arrival and departure involves a road transfer.
Getting to the station
Loca (ride-hailing app). The most predictable option. Book from your hotel; fares from the city centre typically run 120,000–180,000 LAK. Works with foreign cards.
Taxi or hotel car. Most hotels arrange a fixed-price car. Agree the price before you get in — 150,000–250,000 LAK from the centre is the normal band.
Shared shuttle. Shuttle vans run between the city and the station around train times. Cheapest option, least flexible. Your guesthouse can point you to the nearest pickup.
Booking a ride from your phone
If you'd rather book from an app than arrange a car through your hotel, two are worth having on your phone before travel day.
Kok Kok MOVE. A Lao ride-hailing app you can book in a few taps — set your pickup and a driver comes to you. It's usually the cheapest way out to the station, closer to tuk-tuk money than a private car, so it's the easy pick when you want to keep the transfer cheap without haggling.
inDrive. Also cheap and widely used, but in Laos the app needs a VPN to work — install and set up the VPN before your travel day, not while you're standing outside with your bags. If you'd rather skip the VPN, Kok Kok MOVE or Loca will get you there without one.
When to arrive
Arrive 60 minutes before departure. Ninety if you are boarding the cross-border train to China. The station closes boarding before the printed departure time, and the road from town is the most common reason people miss trains — not the queue inside.
Inside the station
Security screening at the entrance: passport and ticket checked, bags scanned. Past security you'll find the waiting hall, ticket counters, toilets, and basic food and drink kiosks. Gates to the platform open shortly before departure and close a few minutes before the train leaves. Signage is in Lao, Chinese, and English.

Arriving at Vientiane
Follow the exit flow to the forecourt. Loca cars, taxis, and shuttles wait outside; the same price bands apply in reverse. If you're continuing to Thailand, the Friendship Bridge border is on the far side of the city — allow a full hour by road.
